Ryan Dempster for Four Years – Bleh
I like Ryan Dempster and think he’s a valuable asset. If I felt there was a shot that he could be healthy for at least three to three and a half years, I’d be happy with this deal. But, I don’t. Obviously every long term pitcher signing comes with a health risk, but Dempster’s had Tommy John on his right elbow. That’s not any sort of kiss of death, but I simply don’t think Dempster will repeat last year’s numbers anytime soon, plus I’m not confident his elbow is going to hold up.
So Luke, I hear you, man.

The thing is, with the current market for starting pitchers, if he DOES repeat his 2008 numbers, this will be the best post-arbitration contract in baseball. They signed him at what appears to be about the going rate for an average starter. Of course, if he gets hurt, you always lose (though the club usually has insurance that convers the really bad injuries). But if he’s anything better than the mess he was in 2001-03 or so, this contract will be fine.
He’s had one of the weirdest careers ever, which makes it pretty hard to judge. I like the breakdown here (you won’t like it as much, but interesting anyway):

Any word on this interview you are doing with ACB Mike?

Hey Luke,
Yeah, Ryno e-mailed me a bunch of questions today. I wish he just did the interview himself, but instead it’s a collection of questions from anonymous people over there. The questions are more of the serious baseball variety or stupid attempts to attack me on rbi’s again. If Ryno would just do it himself, it would be a lot more clever… and the whole thing would be a lot more fun.
Actually, the timing of your question makes me wonder if you’re Ryno, Luke! Though, I’m certain you’re not. But if you were, nice job.

Nah, I don’t think I could spend as much time over at ACB as much as Ryno. ha

I don’t think I could spend as much time over at ACB as Ryno does. There that one makes sense. lol

Don’t trip, Luke. I got your back.
And yeah, I know you’re not Ryno, but the timing was impeccable.
The questions for the interview are okay… but I promise some good answers.

Oh, and by the way, from here forward, ACB won’t be referred to as such.
From now on, they’ll be known as either GGU (Gay Guys United) or DHTS (Dumb Hicks Talking Shit). So, I hope for your cooperation in this matter.
Pretty serious stuff. (Lighten up, WV.)

I had a couple of questions for you (the first few), but I just don’t have the time these days to put any real thought into it. I took a new job about two weeks ago, and they’re running me ragged.
